About Medical Insurance

Medical insurance is designed to cover the private costs of medical treatment for acute conditions – an illness, disease or injury that is likely to respond to short-term medical treatment. Medical cover gives you the assurance that if you fall ill or need an operation you will receive treatment promptly, and have some choice in the nature of this treatment. Patients who take out medical insurance can often decide when and where they will receive treatment from a surgeon of their choice. They are usually entitled to an en-suite room in a private hospital, with TV and choice of food. Some operations which you may have to wait months for on the NHS can be carried out within a few days under the private system.

Since medical insurance is intended for short-term, curable illness or injury, certain treatments won’t be covered. These usually include chronic (long-term) illnesses e.g. cancer, Parkinson’s; Accident and Emergency admission; gender reassignment; cosmetic surgery; drug abuse or self-inflicted injuries, as well as injuries caused by participating in 'hazardous pursuits'. However, cover varies depending on your policy, so it’s essential to check the small print before signing on the dotted line. Each insurer will give you a policy document and summary setting out the limits of the policy.
